In developing countries there is a vicious circle of nature degradation and poverty. Tourism is increasingly put forward by international, national and local nature conservation and development organisations, governments and the tourism industry as a promising mechanism to resolve this circle in the South and a way to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals. As a consequence new institutional arrangements, policies and practices emerge at different levels of scale (from the local to the global) in various developing countries. However, many of these are neither theoretically nor empirically judged on their merits and contributions to sustainable development. This researchis a collaborative effort to address current knowledge gaps in sustainable tourism development in a number of developing countries and to provide scientifically credible and practically relevant answers to the achievements of Millennium Development Goals, specific policy targets as well as local needs. This project is supported by four Dutch organisations:

  • Netherlands Committee of IUCN
  • WWF Netherlands
  • Cordaid
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

This research project is executed by staff members and the following PhD candidates:
